Dr Robert Bird

Rob Bird is a part time haematologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he was previously Haematology Service Director & before that, Laboratory Director. He is currently appointed at pre-eminent specialist level.

Rob obtained his medical degree at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London, UK, before moving to Australia and completing training in clinical and laboratory haematology in 1997.

Rob’s longstanding interest is in immunohaematology/classical haematology and in less common diseases such as systemic mastocytosis. He was senior author of the ANZ ITP Guideline, has published widely on ITP and has been invited speaker on ITP at many international meetings.

Previous roles include Chief Examiner, Haematology, RCPA; Qld rep on the ARCBS National Transfusion Committee; Chairman, Blood Products Advisory Committee (Qld); Institutional lead, standard 7, Metro South Health; Chairman Metro South Blood Management Committee; Member Qld Blood Board and of Qld Health Medications Advisory Committee. Until recently Rob was chairman/co-chair of the RACP/RCPA CJCT Haematology and he remains Registrar, Board of Education & Assessment, RCPA.
